Janice f. Whaley

Janice F. Whaley serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Donor Network West in San Ramon, CA, the second largest OPO in the U.S., joining the organization in January of 2019. Four months after her arrival, the organization has moved well above the national average in recovery metrics. Her leadership, advocacy and operational efforts in both the state of California as well as the nation overall serve as evidence of her passion.

Prior to assuming the Chief Executive role at Donor Network West, Whaley held leadership and clinical roles in three other OPOs, achieving similar results. From 2014-2018, Whaley served as Chief Operating Officer of LifeShare of Oklahoma, essentially doubling the number of organ donors early on in her five-year tenure. Prior to her arrival at LifeShare, Whaley attended Harvard Business School in Boston. Whaley held the role of Managing Director of Clinical Operations at LifeGift in Houston, TX from 2003-2013. While in Houston, the fourth largest U.S. city, Whaley managed the complex processes involved in working with 5 transplant centers and 24 transplant programs, leading the region to record setting numbers of donors recovered. Whaley started her career and honed her skills in organ and tissue recovery at the University of Alabama, gaining expertise in numerous arenas, including organ preservation. Whaley is dually certified in organ and tissue recovery through ABTC and the AATB, respectively.

A committed advocate for donation, Whaley has served in multiple capacities on several national boards and committees related to organ and tissue donation and recovery. Most recently, she was appointed to serve a four-year term as a member of the Secretary of Health and Human Services’ Advisory Council on Transplantation (ACOT). Whaley is a member of the Association for Multicultural Affairs in Transplantation (AMAT) and served as president in 2003. She currently serves as an elected officer on the Board of Directors for AMAT. Whaley is also a member of the North American Association of Transplant Coordinators (NATCO), the American Society of Transplantation (AST), the American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS) and the American Association of Tissue Banking (AATB). She was appointed by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to serve as a faculty member for the National Learning Congress (NLC) in 2012. Whaley served as the Representative for OPTN/UNOS Region 4 OPO Committee (2015 -2017).

Whaley received a Master of Public Health from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a post graduate certificate from Harvard Business School, Executive Management Program. She graduated from Oakwood College in Huntsville, Alabama, with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a minor in Chemistry.

VP of Organ Operations

John Lilley

John Lilley brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in the world of organ and tissue procurement as the Vice President of Organ Operations. John’s life has been intertwined with transplantation and donation for over 25 years when his father received a life-saving heart transplant. It was this miraculous gift that later drew John to Donor Network West (then California Transplant Donor Network) in 2001.

John began his career in healthcare almost 30 years ago when he faithfully served in the United States Air Force as a firefighter/paramedic eventually supervising fire and medical response personnel in multiple duty stations around the world. After being honorably discharged, John joined CTDN in 2001 as the first non-RN Clinical Procurement Coordinator. John was called back to active duty in 2004 and served his country in Iraq and Afghanistan as a Fire Protection Specialist and Nationally Certified EMT-Paramedic. Upon his return to CTDN, John moved his family to Reno, Nevada to support the growing region in Northern Nevada for the organization.  John advanced his career with CTDN in the role of Supervisor and Manager of Clinical Services all while obtaining his Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree at the University of Nevada, Reno. He also completed his Certified Procurement Transplant Coordinator (CPTC) accreditation from the American Board of Transplant Coordinators.

John departed from Donor Network West in 2015 to serve as Director of Organ Clinical Operations at OneLegacy while earning his Master of Business Administration from Washington State University. Fortunately for Donor Network West, he returned in 2018 as Regional Director for Nevada. John’s region was the top performing region by metrics in 2019 as he helped build a culture of donation along with leading the efforts in transitioning all service area hospitals in Northern Nevada to Donor Network West as a single provider for both organ and tissue services. He assumed the role of Vice President of Organ Operations near the beginning of 2020.

As a life-long learner, John has returned back to school in pursuit of his Master of Science in Nursing degree to obtain his Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) credential at the University of Nevada, Reno. His experience, education, and leadership helps Donor Network West to be one of the nation’s top-performing organ procurement organizations.

In addition to being a passionate Wolf Pack alumnus, John is an avid baseball fan and grew up in Los Angeles where he became a Dodgers fan.

JT Mason

JT Mason has been with Donor Network West for over 10 years and serves as the VP of Information Technology. JT has worked in the information technology field for the past 30 years in such industries as Geology, Archaeology, Environmental Services, and Water Engineering.

Mason earned his Master in Information Systems from the University of California, Berkeley and is a Certified Professional in Health Information Technology (CPHIT). Originally from Ames, Iowa, Mason is an avid skier who has also lived in Maine, Colorado, Wyoming, and presently in California.

VP of Hospital Development & Family Services

Kathy Vasilopulos

Kathy Vasilopulos has been with Donor Network West as the Vice President of Hospital Development and Family Services since August of 2019. Beginning as a cardiovascular ICU nurse, she later joined other healthcare entities in business startup, staffing and recruitment, and project management. Vasilopulos’s career in the organ and procurement industry started in 2009 at Gift of Hope in Illinois. She proceeded to serve as OneLegacy’s Vice President of Organ Operations in Los Angeles.

Vasilopulos has a Bachelors in the Science of Nursing from the University of Illinois and a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She is also a Certified Procurement Transplant Coordinator and a Certified Tissue Bank Specialist. Born and raised in Chicago, Kathy is a die-hard Cubs fan.
