A Bright Future
April is National Donate Life Month, a time to reflect on the lives healed through organ, eye, and tissue donation. Thanks to the generosity of donors and their families, thousands of people can get a second chance at life.
Baby Scott’s illness meant that he was not going to survive unless he got a liver transplant. Thankfully, his miracle of life came when he was only 8-months-old. Now, his future looks bright because someone said “yes” to donation.
Nearly 15 million Californians and over 900,000 Nevadans have already registered as organ and tissue donors but the need is still great; 22,000 people in California and 600 people in Nevada await a life-saving organ transplant.
“When you get to help someone, like a young child, you’ll feel immense happiness and joy. Whoever our donor was, I want to tell the family that I am truly thankful. I don’t even know how to put it into words because there are just so many emotions and appreciations that come with this gift,” says Cuc Nguyen, Scott’s mother. “Everyone should register as an organ donor.”
The easiest way to get into the spirit of Donate Life Month is to register as an organ, eye, and tissue donor. If you have already registered, be sure to share your decision and encourage everyone you know to sign up, as well.
One organ donor can save the lives of up to eight people and a tissue donor can heal more than 75 others. Learn more about donation here. Anyone can become an organ donor! It only takes a minute.
