Donor Network West Lights The Reno Arch Blue And Green For National Donate Life Month
Nevadans are encouraged to register to become organ donors throughout April
April 1, 2021, (Reno, NV) – Every April in honor of National Donate Life Month, Donor Network West (DNWest), the federally designated Organ Procurement Organization (OPO) in northern Nevada and northern California, encourages Nevadans to register as organ donors, while also celebrating life-saving transplants and honoring both living and deceased donors. To register as an organ donor, you can visit your local Department of Motor Vehicles or visit DonorNetworkWest.org.
There are nearly 600 Nevadans awaiting an organ transplant. To bring attention to this statistic and the need for organ donation, even during a pandemic, Donor Network West will be lighting up the Reno Arch in blue and green starting April 1st as a symbol of organ and tissue donation. The Arch will be blue and green the entire month of April.
“Donor Network West is proud to be a part of the Nevada community for more than 30 years and we are committed to continuing to help save and heal more lives,” said Janice F. Whaley, president and CEO of Donor Network West. “Today as we light the Reno Arch blue and green, we hope to raise awareness of the importance of organ and tissue donation and encourage all Nevada residents to consider registering to become an organ donor. Together we can hopefully end the wait for the nearly 600 Nevadans waiting for an organ transplant.”
National Donate Life Month incorporates two additional organ donation awareness days in April:
- National Donate Life Blue & Green Day – April 16. A day to honor both living and deceased donors by wearing blue and green.
- National Pediatric Transplant Week – April 18-24. A week-long focus on the pediatric transplant waiting list and putting an end to it.
National Donate Life Month was established by Donate Life America and its partnering organizations in 2003 to raise awareness of the importance of organ, eye and tissue donation and to honor those that have saved lives through the gift of donation.
Donor Network West encourages northern Nevadans to take a few minutes of their time to make a life-saving decision to register as an organ donor. One organ donor can save the lives of up to eight people and a tissue donor can heal more than 75 lives. To learn more about organ and tissue donation, or to register as a donor, visit your local DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) or DonorNetworkWest.org.
